Bunga Raya



This time, we would like to discuss about our national flower, Bunga Raya. Many young people today do not know that Bunga Raya is our national flower, and the purpose of choosing Bunga Raya as a national flower. For your information, after independence, the Ministry of Agriculture has been order to propose appropriate flower to choose as a national flower. Ministry of Agriculture has proposed seven types of flowers to be chosen as the national flower. After going through a tight selection, on 28 Julai 1960, Bunga Raya officially announced as national flower.


The purposed of choosing Bunga Raya as national flower because symbolically, Bunga Raya red color represents courage, and the each of the five petals of the Bunga Raya represents the Five Principles of Nationhood of Malaysia. The five principles of Nationhood represents an attempt to base national unity on certain concepts which are universal and acceptable to all citizens, regardless of ethnic origin or religious affiliation. Since early times, Bunga Raya has been known for its medical usages. Till today, people still use the roots of the Bunga Raya as a cure for fever while a poultice prepared from the leaves can be applied to cure headache.
